Educate To Cultivate
At The McSweeney Foundation, we believe nothing is more important than giving children the best possible chance to succeed. Providing educational assistance and resources to underprivileged children both in our local communities and abroad is the greatest contribution we can make to those who, otherwise may never have a chance at the success they deserve. We don't believe in giving handouts. Rather, our initiatives focus on enabling those we support with the ability improve themselves and their environment.
Improving focus by fighting hunger.
When you're hungry, it's almost impossible to focus on anything but... well... being hungry. In fact, studies show that a child battling hunger loses almost 2 hours of quality learning time in the classroom each day worrying about how he or she will eat after school and on weekends. The McSweeney Foundation works with schools in lower income communities to provide after school and weekend meals to children of families in need. In turn, learning opportunities that were once lost can be re-captured, thereby enhancing a child's educational experience.
Improving performance with the proper tools.
It's hard to complete a task efficiently without the proper tools. Sadly, there are many children in our communities who cannot afford the school supplies they need to complete their required work on a daily basis. To make matters worse, due to limited funding in lower income schools, it is also difficult for the school to allocate resources for underprivileged students. Through a Backpacks for Kids program, The McSweeney Foundation is able to meet the supplies needs of hundreds of students each year both locally and abroad to help insure they can complete the work that will keep them academically competitive now and cultivate habits they can use for their entire lives.
Raising standards with better technology infrastructure.
In schools in low-income communities, technology is often outdated. Thus, information is more difficult to access, learning is hindered, and students in those schools fall comparatively behind. By outfitting schools' computer laboratories with new technology infrastructure, The McSweeney Foundation is able to give teachers and students access to a world of information delivered at a much faster speed. Technological relevance ensures higher academic standards, increased learning, and greater confidence in students.
